Program Files 1948-1987; 1972-1985.

This series comprises records retained by the Lutheran Church in America's (LCA) Division for World Mission and Ecumenism's (DWME) Secretary for East Asia. These subject files represent work related to DWME mission efforts in Hong Kong. They are from 1948-1987 with the majority dating from 1972-1985. Types of records include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, meeting agenda, minutes and exhibits, topical papers, publications, grant applications and their accompanying material, copies of constitutions and by-laws, annual reports, publications, promotional and informational brochures, pamphlets and leaflets, and financial reports and budgets. The majority of records are correspondence sent to and from the Secretary for East Asia, the Rev. Delbert Anderson. Subject matter includes a variety of aspects of mission work in Hong Kong and evangelism efforts in that region. Files are categorized into 14 subseries each pertaining to a particular aspect of Hong Kong mission work. Examples of subseries include the Evangelical Lutheran Church Hong Kong (ELCHK); the LCA's missionaries association, the Lutheran Theological Seminary, projects given financial assistance by the DWME, the Lutheran Middle School, and records pertaining to DWME involvement in committees on Christian education and promoting the use of various forms of media communication. Records dated prior to the formation of the LCA were kept in this series because it could not be determined to which predecessor church they belonged, or there were records for two predecessor churches in the same file. Two subjects to note are records related to the ELCHK and projects given financial assistance by the DWME. Types of projects include capital projects, chaplaincy programs, schools, and publishing. Some projects include a project number in addition to the project title, but it is unknown how projects were assigned a particular number. Files pertaining to the Lutheran Theological Seminary include information related to relocation efforts in the mid-1980s. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject. For additional LCA files related to Hong Kong see Lutheran Theological Seminary (LCA 16/3/1/5), Lutheran Missions Conference (LCA 16/3/1/7), the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong (LCA 16/3/1/8), and the China Advisory Committee (LCA 28/3/4/1).
